Santa Fe A to Z: I Santa Fe Unlimited's Santa Fe A to Z

A Taos Pueblo Indian from the early 1900s.Indian (or Native American)
A member of any of the indigenous peoples of North, Central, and South America, especially those of North America, so named when Columbus landed in North America, believing that he had arrived on the east coast of India. The term "American Indian" has been steadily replaced, especially in official contexts, by the more recent term "Native American" (first recorded in the 1950s and becoming prominent in the 1970s). The latter is preferred by some as being a more accurate description. American Indian is still in general use, however, because it is not normally regarded as offensive to either the American Indian or those who prefer to use the term. (~Aimee)

Indian Market
Indian Market, held annually on the Plaza, showcases about 1,200 area American Indians artists whose mediums include painting, poetry, sculpture, pottery, jewelry, and woven materials. It is Santa Fe’s single largest tourist attraction, drawing an estimated 100,000 visitors annually. (~Jean)
